Warrior Not Sicklers - SSSCF Support Group

We have kept a good fellowship with a network of Sickle Cell Warriors, Care-givers, the Medical Community and interested members of the public through our Support System - a WhatsApp platform to bring people together, discuss mutual terms and share information as well as simply becoming buddies. This is ideally a sense of togetherness needed in our communities for everybody to feel safe, accepted, encouraged, loved and cared for.

Session activities include keeping up with our Warriors, discussing matters and sharing care methods as well as holding talk seminars from experts and like-minded people.

Our Collaborative & Innovative Projects

Hospital & Medication Bills

Patients under this category are patients dominantly in the rural areas or less privileged to cater for their full medical expenses during a crisis cycle hospitalisation. We can either support in financing half, or pay fully for a patient in dire need. Patients who do not have funds and access to a primary healthcare provider are registered to hospitals in their states where they receive management, treatment during crisis, prescription medication, and attend Sickle Cell outpatient clinic day for follow ups. Our beneficiaries in this category are registered to:

  • Kolstaff Medical Centre, Garki Hospital (Abuja)

  • 44 Military Hospital, Barau Dikko Hospital (Kaduna)

  • Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital (Kano)

  • Funtua General Hospital (Funtua, Katsina)

  • Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Lagos State.

Special Service Aid

Patients under this category are those in dire need of surgical procedures to support their health and wellbeing. We analyze and see how we can provide aid depending on factors such as type of surgery and the surgical fees.Aid package is then provided in the form of part payment of the fees or full sponsorship (subject to foundation funding).Beneficiaries in this category have received funding for hip replacement surgeries, post amputation skin grafts and other minor/major procedures to support their wellbeing.

 GENOTYPE TESTING CAMPAIGN

Samira Sanusi Sickle Cell Foundation has collaborated with hospitals and other organisations to provide access to genotype tests in rural areas where community outreaches are held to test, sensitise and counsel people. The Campaigns have been successful in spreading awareness, providing genotype screenings & counselling on compatibility & implications, with collaborations from hospitals and organisations like;

  • Funtua General Hospital, Katsina

  • Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, AISEC, Global Shapers, Kano

  • Rashid Shekoni Hospital, Dutse General Hospital (Jigawa)

  • Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (Bauchi)

  • Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital (Zaria)

  • Crest Med and Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Lagos

  • FirmCare Diagnostics, Sauki Laboratories, Medicaid, Waru & Durumi IDP Camps.

Members and Volunteers of the foundation as well as medical and lab personnels of Hospitals participate in taking blood samples for tests, enlightening people and identifying Sickle cell patients in the community who are eventually registered as beneficiaries of the foundation’s medical aid.

Counselling

The Foundation offers free counselling to patients with Sickle Cell Anaemia on general health and wellbeing to caregivers and interested patients and intending couples either considering care or Bone Marrow Transplant. Pre – marital counselling is also provided for marrying couples in order to assist with making informed decisions. Our community of survivors, parents, caregivers, doctors and genetic counsellors are happy to give you the expert opinion, professional advice or emotional support you need.

Community Development

Through our Community Development, we have the potential to make a real and positive change in the community. This is one of our key areas of focus here at Samira Sanusi Sickle Cell Foundation, and a source of much success for our Nonprofit Organization. Get in touch with us today and see how you can lend a helping hand with this program.

Clothing Drive

We have successfully launched a year-round Clothing Drive campaign with donations coming in Nationwide; especially from Abuja, Kaduna, Kano and Lagos. Clothing items such as sweaters, sock, hats and baby clothes  have been collected and distributed to Sickle Cell Warriors in Internally Displaced Camps (IDP) across the country and other rural areas we’ve been able to reach.

This project targets the cold season (being the season that affects Sickle Cell Patients the most because of the cold), but runs all year to allow time for collection.

We have dubbed this campaign #ClothingDriveForSC and all publication/Social Media posts and campaigns carry the hashtag
